During an first day in office, Zohran Mamdani committed to “transform” New York City, declaring “a fresh chapter” and an ambitious beginning to his administration.

A Historic Mayor

The young political star, who was a relatively obscure state assemblyman, has become the city's first Muslim mayor. He also made history by being the inaugural to be sworn in using the Qur'an.

“A moment like this comes rarely and even more uncommon is it that the people themselves whose grasp the mechanisms of progress,” Mamdani added.

Rejecting suggestions to be modest, the mayor was emphatic: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to redefine is that of modest goals. Beginning today we will rule with courage and vision.”

Governing with Socialist Convictions

Mamdani openly embraced his socialist politics. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will govern as one. I will not forsake my convictions for concern of being called radical,” he proclaimed to rapturous applause.

The swearing-in was a dual event, starting with a late-night oath-taking in a former subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the front steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's rise as a victory over powerful interests.

An Ambitious Platform

Mamdani now undertakes one of the most unrelenting jobs in American politics, with a plan promising:

• Subsidized daycare
• Fare-free public buses
• A halt to rent increases for about 1 million households
• A trial program of city-run grocery stores

The projected $10 billion price tag of these services may prove difficult to fund. Mamdani has vowed to raise taxes on the richest residents and big business. However, as a municipality under the authority of the state government, he will require the cooperation of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Navigating External Headwinds

The new mayor also faces skepticism from some Jewish New Yorkers concerned about his past criticisms regarding Israel. Tensions were highlighted during the transition when a appointments director resigned over controversial past social media posts.

Mamdani has sought to address these tensions by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, preventing the appearance of losing a Jewish police chief.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “socialist” and warned of withholding federal funding. Despite this, a recent encounter between the two was described as surprisingly cordial.

The Fundamental Tests of Leadership

In the end, New York mayors are evaluated by their success in delivering essential functions: sanitation, curbing the rodent problem, repairing potholes, and making sure smooth transit service.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his administration's anti-crime efforts, pointing to record low numbers of murders and shootings in 2025, with 301 homicides reported.

As his work starts, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Astoria apartment to the stately mayoral residence. The previous occupant offered a unusual warning about a reputed friendly ghost in the home, which reportedly only troubles those who fail to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani ended his address with a direct declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
