In a significant development ahead of the upcoming general election, a pair of prominent figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance comes in the aftermath of large-scale and fatal youth-led demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the removal of the sitting government.
A Pledge to Address Youth Demands
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially pledged to prioritize the issues highlighted by the new generation. This commitment follows the turbulent anti-corruption unrest that occurred in September, which led to considerable loss of life.
"Agreement must not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane following the deal was signed.
The September revolt was triggered by widespread anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a catalyst for deeper resentment stemming from a long period of slow growth and persistent accusations of systemic political corruption.
Details of the New Political Agreement
According to the official pact, the positions for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread discontent with the country's older political leadership. He has in the past held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key figure in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He played a role in setting up the caretaker government that took over after the ousted administration was dissolved.
Wider Government Discussions Taking Place
In a related event, the current interim prime minister recently held meetings with several leading political leaders. These discussions included former prime ministers and the heads of other major parties, marking the first such gathering since the time of the uprising.
Following these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that holding a credible election is a shared duty. The message affirmed the government's commitment to ensuring a secure and fear-free atmosphere for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
